The Giant's Awakening in Beijing
The sleeping giant has awakened. Its awakening has also engendered more and more job openings to feed a world hungry for more and more Chinese products and services. And with Beijing being the capital city of the People's Republic of China, these jobs are concentrated in and around the Forbidden City. As is usually the case with capital cities, Beijing is also the educational, cultural and political center of China.
Beijing presents many opportunities for jobs from the white to the blue collar as well as from the office to the factory. Many international establishments from banking and finance as well as fashion and entertainment to food and services are sprouting up like the proverbial mushrooms in the city. The city center itself boasts of countless business establishments from banks to retail shops that present countless job opportunities, not to mention that the surrounding area is fast becoming industrialized, too.
Since Beijing is also increasingly becoming a Westernized country in its business dealings, foreigners have an easier time dealing with prospective employers. This is in sharp contrast with the China of old where the iron hand was taken literally indeed.
Job opportunities exist in many areas. As of last count, there were 26 Fortune Global 500 companies and 751 financial institutions supported by the city's booming real estate and automobile industries. Or you may proceed to the Beijing Central Business District to apply for jobs in the regional headquarters of multinational corporations. And then there are the Chinese start-up entrepreneurs. Beijing is known for its high-growth start-ups that offer more job opportunities to people with generalized and specialized skills.
Still, the Eastern business etiquette must be observed if you are to make a good impression on the Chinese. For one thing, you must respect the organizational hierarchy even to the point of keeping the peace in disagreements with superiors. For another thing, you should learn to socialize with your Chinese co-workers before going into serious discussion of the job at hand. There are many cultural hurdles that must be overcome as a foreign worker in China but it is possible to succeed in just a short time.
Also, you must learn how to speak the language. Many foreigners have found it virtually impossible to conduct business or be hired for Beijing jobs without a good grasp of the Chinese language. As such, do take the time to learn the language as well as secure the necessary documents like entry visa and work permit before going to Beijing to look for a job.
Also, do book your holiday apartment with any online reservation site before hopping on the plane for the Forbidden City. It is such a big place that looking for your accommodations while looking for a job is an exercise in frustration.
Along with the awakening of the giant came the slew of job opportunities for professionals and workers hit by the recession in their own countries. These are opportunities that must not be allowed to slip away.
